Holiday cheer is in the air! As you prepare for some well-deserved rest and relaxation, take a moment to run through these essential safety checks to keep you, your family and your belongings safe.

Ann Cloete from Aon South Africa, an insurance brokerage and risk advisor, shares top holiday security tips to keep your season both merry and safe.

“As excitement builds, it's easy to overlook security basics, but the festive season often brings heightened risks—from home and vehicle safety to personal security,” says Ann. “A little planning goes a long way in ensuring peace of mind, so that if anything does go wrong, you’re well-prepared and can still enjoy your holiday.”

  1. Home Security is Key
  • Check Alarms and Locks: Test burglar bars, alarm systems, panic buttons, and security gates to ensure everything functions correctly. Notify your security company if you’re going away so they can closely monitor things.
  • Deterrent Lighting: Well-lit surroundings discourage intruders, so make sure exterior lighting is in place.
  • Safe Storage: If you leave valuables behind, secure them in a wall- or floor-mounted safe.
  • Caution with Home Viewings: If your home is listed for sale, arrange viewings exclusively through your agent, and avoid allowing anyone on the property without proper verification.
  1. Pet Safety

A key holiday precaution for pet owners is securing pets within the yard and keeping them safe from street access to avoid poisoning incidents. Make arrangements for their care if you’ll be away.

  1. Avoid Carrying Large Sums of Cash

Holiday crowds can be distracting, and carrying a lot of cash makes you a target. Opt for card payments or mobile banking where possible, even at markets or small shops.

  1. Be Aware When Leaving or Arriving Home

Stay vigilant when entering or exiting your home. If you think you’re being followed, avoid pulling directly into your driveway. Also, avoid wearing expensive jewellery while shopping, as it can draw unwanted attention.

  1. Stay Safe in and Around Your Vehicle
  • Keep Valuables Out of Sight: At traffic lights or parking spots, avoid displaying valuables like phones, bags, or electronics.
  • Double-Check Locks: Make sure your car doors are locked—remote jamming is still a common threat.
  • Tracking Devices: Ensure that your car’s tracking device is active, especially if you’ll be travelling long distances.
  • If you are travelling to neighbouring countries such as Mozambique in your motor vehicle, it is important to check with your broker or insurer if there are restrictions imposed on the country you are planning to visit. Notify your insurer of the trip timeously to receive your cross-border insurance letter.
  1. Protect Motorbikes and Trailers

Motorbikes and trailers are increasingly targeted by thieves. If possible, lock them in a garage or keep them out of sight to deter theft.

  1. Safety Tips for Domestic Workers

The holiday season can bring heightened risks on the streets. Encourage your domestic staff to stay cautious on their commutes and take note of any unusual activity.

  1. Travel Insurance is a Must

Travel insurance is essential for international trips, covering medical needs, cancellations, delays, and lost luggage. Read the terms carefully, check any limitations, and save emergency contacts offline in case of coverage outages.

  1. Renting Out Your Home? Protect Your Assets

If you’re renting out your property for extra income, review your insurance policy with your broker to confirm coverage for potential liabilities and property damage.

“Whatever your holiday plans may be, remember that awareness is the best defence. Taking a few minutes to review your insurance and safety preparations can go a long way in protecting you and your loved ones, allowing you to fully relax and enjoy the season,” concludes Ann.

Stay safe and have a fantastic holiday season!
